Using A Regular Cycle of Reminders

Why?

• Regular and recurring reminders norm students to expect information from the instructor at specific times in the course. 
• Regular reminders creates structure for students who do not physically attend class.
• Regular reminders about due dates, important assignments, etc. help students organize their time and study schedule. 

Implications for Teaching and Learning.

• Using regular reminders helps students organize their time and schedule.
• Regular reminders about important course information is perceived by students as coming from instructors who are student-centered and concerned about the success of their students.
• Reminders are often perceived by students as something that the instructor did not have to do but did because of a concern for student success.
• Reminders are evidence that can be used in grade appeals to demonstrate that students were informed in numerous ways and at different times.

Promising Practices for TWU.

• Begin using reminders early in the course and continue to use them consistently throughout the course.
• Use a regular cycle of reminders. Posting Announcements at a specific time and day of the week will create the expectation that students should log in to the course to see new information shortly after the posting.
• The Calendar feature is easy to use and can be set in advance to appear as a reminder to students.
• Announcements can be set in advance and used to push reminders to students. We encourage you to consider using the email feature in Announcement to also push email reminders to students for the most important information.
