Specific & Descriptive Criteria for Assessment of Student Work
Why?
-
Students should know, early in the course, how they will be evaluated on their work.
-
Clear descriptions of the individual elements comprising a grade help to demystify the assessment process.
-
Defined criteria can be used to focus the feedback process.
Implications for Teaching and Learning.
-
Rubrics are useful tools to define criteria and establish indicators of quality.
-
Create lists or tables of assignment elements with associated point values to help students understand the importance of each element to the assignment.
Promising Practices for TWU.
- Explanations and details of assessment procedures should be prominently displayed in the course.
- Tables or lists explaining the parts of major assignments with associated point values are easier to read by online students.
How?
Good practice suggests that students benefit from understanding the standards and criteria that will be used to assess their work. Clearly defined expectations and required elements of assignments and activities clarify these expectations for students.
- Derived from the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric for Online and Hybrid Courses FY 06/07
