Recycling your Blackboard course enables you to reuse your course by selectively removing areas of the course, (such as students who were previously enrolled in the course and their grades), while preserving other areas of your course, such as the course content and question pools.
The Recycle Course tool is useful at the end of a course. It allows you to select specific information (such as users) to be deleted from the course while retaining the rest of the content for future use. This tool is useful for removing all participants with the role of student from your course. Be careful in your use of recycle. You also have an obligation to retain student information and grades.
Before recycling any portion of your course, be sure to Archive Course. Be sure to Export the Gradebook as well.
To recycle your course, follow the steps described below.
At a minimum, you should recycle “Users.” If you do not recycle the “Users”, you will have students enrolled in your course and listed in your Gradebook who have already completed the course. Be aware, however, that when you recycle “Users,” all students will be removed from the course.
| Select | If you wish to remove | Notes |
| Course Information | All information, such as the course syllabus, entered into the Course Information area of your Blackboard course. | |
| Course Documents | All information and files entered in the Course Document area | |
| Assignments |
All assignment descriptions entered using the Assignment tool. |
|
| Faculty Information | All information about the staff entered into the “Staff Information” area. | |
| Groups: | Groups formed along with any information contained in the Groups’ forums and other tools. | |
| Announcements |
All announcements entered for the course. |
|
| Users | All users, except the instructor, currently enrolled in the course. If you plan to reuse your course, this is one of the most important items to recycle. |
If you do not recycle this area, you will have students enrolled in your course and listed in your Gradebook who have already completed the course. Caution: Recycling the “Users” also removes the users’ grades from the Gradebook. This includes students who may have taken an incomplete and need to finish their coursework. It is very important that you export the Gradebook, as described in Step 1, before recycling the “Users”. Retaining a copy of the Gradebook by exporting it to your local computer insures that you will have a copy of the students’ grades once recycling removes them from the system. |
| Discussion Board | Forums and posting made to the course’s Discussion Board. | |
| Tests and Surveys | Assessments (quizzes and surveys), question pools, and grades associated with the assessments | Recycling your assessment will remove all quizzes as well as the question pools that you have created. If you plan to reuse quizzes and/or pools, do not recycle the Assessments. You will have to recreate all quizzes and question pools from scratch if you do. An alternative to recycling this area is to recycle the Gradebook. This will mark all quizzes “unavailable” until you make them available again to your new students. |
| Statistics | Statistical information collected by Blackboard, such as, how many students accessed the course | |
| Gradebook | Gradebook items entered, such as assignments, quizzes, exams (anything that creates a column in the gradebook). Removing the Gradebook does not affect assessments or pools. | Before recycling the “Gradebook”, download the Gradebook. Downloading the Gradebook before recycling enables you to retain a copy of the Gradebook and insures that you will have a copy of the students’ grades once they are removed from the system. Removing the Gradebook will not remove the quizzes you have created - it only removes the quiz entries and student grades for those quizzes from the Gradebook. All of the quizzes will be marked “unavailable” until you make them available again to your new students. |
• Type the word “Remove” with a capital “R” in the text box and click the Submit button.
