Deciding to Use TaskStream

What to Consider Before You Build.

TaskStream is a customizable electronic portfolio toolset. It is useful for developing and managing e-portfolios but one of the greatest strengths with this system is the ability for faculty to provide formative and summative assessments of individual artifacts or entire porttfolios. For many programs or courses, portfolios offer a way for students to demostrate competency and for faculty to assess competency. Perhaps even more importantly, TaskStream allows faculty members to access and comment on student work without physically getting together to review notebooks or other containers of documents. A long as faculty and students have access to an Internet connection, work can be done on the portfolios.

Before developing any portfolio, it is helpful to spend some time planning. This planning doesn't require any knowledge of TaskStream at all. It does require some require some thought so you can develop the exact portfolio to meet your needs.

1. Clarify TaskStream program outcomes:
  • What artifacts will be assessed?
  • What points in the program will they be assessed? (every course, certain courses, semesters, etc.)
  • What is the intended use for the final portfolio? (exit from the program, supplemental evaluation, work portfolio)
  • How will the program be structured? (by semester, standard, course, etc.)

2. When will the department begin the portfolio project?
  • Will an entering group of students submit over multiple years?
  • Will current students need to go back and address various artifacts?

3. What artifacts will be required?
  • What instructions will the student need to complete the submission of this artifact?
  • What tabs (or formats) are appropriate and should be made available in the Content Editor for submitting this artifact? (attachment, video, picture, etc.)

4. How will the Artifacts be Evaluated?
  • How many reviewers or evaluators be needed for each artifact.
  • What assessment tool: Rubric, score, P/F. Meets/Does not Meet
  • Will standards be used – which ones?

What Information the Designers Need From You?

Instructional Design can create a portfolio (DRF in TaskStream language) that will allow you to assess progress and provide feedback. If you define a set of artifacts and the directions for formatting and submitting them, we can set up a working folio for your use and discussion.  It will still need refinement and it will need you, as content experts, to provide those finishing touches.

If you wish, you may complete this information worksheet. The Instructional Designer will use this to construct an initial mock-up for you to view. After you have had a chance to review the mock-up, the ID will work with you on any changes or design issues you’d like.

1. Title of Artifact: Please name the artifact you wish the student to submit and the course number associated with the artifact

2. Type of material: Text, image, PPT, video, web links, standards.

3. Directions for completing the artifact: Please include details as to formatting, style, and content.

4. Directions for submitting the artifact: Note if the artifact will also have to be submitted to Bb to complete a course assignment.

5. Example of work: If you wish, you may include an example for students to view.

6. Due date: (if applicable)

7. Number of Reviewers (provide feedback only, do not score/evaluate): This is the number of people who will be providing feedback to the student, but not necessarily grading (evaluating) the artifact.

8. Number of Evaluators (do scoring of artifact): Will there be one or two people submitting a score, grade or approval on the artifact?
