Clear and Concise Navigational Instructions
Just because you know what is contained in each section doesn't mean that students will make the leap. Clearly defining what is contained in each section will minimize students' confusion with navigation.
Providing an explanation about the course in "student friendly" language provides context for students.
Expectations for Online Behavior
Students may not know how to act in the online environment (although we are sure that they believe they know). Careful explanation will solve some issues long before they become a problem.
You must establish your online persona in some way. If not, your course looks much like a correspondence course with little instructor contact. Your introduction is a good starting point.
You should require introductions from the students so you get to know more about them and so other students can begin to identify with their classmates.
Minimum Technology Skills and Requirements
Post some explanation about the basic technology skills and technologies required for the course.
Clearly explain your grading policy in terms that any student can understand.
Course Policy on Late Assignments
Define your expectations for due dates and what happens to work that is late.
Specific and Descriptive Criteria for Student Participation
Successful distance courses have student participation. You should define exactly what you expect students to do to participate in the course.
Specific and Descriptive Criteria for Assessment of Student Work
Spending some time explaining how you will assess is important. If possible, provide examples or models to illustrate criteria to students for each assignment.
Statement for Instructor Response Time
Clearly define how soon and how often students should expect communication from you.
Provide information (within the course) on how to access technical support at TWU.
Support for Students with Disabilities
Include the TWU approved disability statement.
