Adding Images Using the Text Editor

What it is.

You may already be familiar with Blackboard’s Visual Text Box Editor [VTBE] which appears throughout Blackboard. One of the VTBE capabilities is multimedia support for adding images, audio, video, and Flash material to your course.

Implications for Teaching and Learning.

Images comprise more than just pictures, and can include tables, illustrations, and photographs. Images are sometimes used in online courses in a decorative manner but they can be used for much more. Images can be used to enhance learning by providing visual backdrops to help illustrate content or links between concepts, provide directional cues, or demonstrate material using a non-text format. However, in order to maximize the benefits of using images or graphics, considering how the user will be impacted by the addition of visual material to a course is important. For example, upload time, display qualities, and visual abilities can affect how well the intended instructional goal of using an image is met.

Note: Please be mindful of copyright as it applys to images. If you wish your students to see an image you have found on an external website, you may wish to link to the image on the webpage, rather than placing a copy of the image directly into your course.

Setting it Up.

1. From the Control Panel, select the Content Area you wish to work in (Documents, Course Information, etc). Select the Item that the image needs to go in.

2. To add material to an existing item in the content area, click Modify

3. From the VTBE (Visual TextBox Editor) toolbar, click on the image icon.

4. This will open  the  Insert Image  window.

5. The first step on this page is Select Image by either browsing for a file or inserting a target url for an external source.

6. The next area, Image Options, allows you to modify the image for placement in the content area. The image height and width are designated in pixels (not inches) and the default for both is set at 100.  Add a boarder if you wish. It is also helpful to add an Alt Tag which is a brief text description of the image. Alt Tags  can be read by screen readers such as JAWS. They are also helpful to people who may have visual challenges.

7. Depending on the image and how you wish your students to use it, you may chose to have the image open in its own window.

8. Finally, click the Submit button. Check your image.
